The first historically Black Greek Letter Organization for women is Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., which was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC on January 15, 1908. Our Motto is By Culture and by Merit. The Purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life and to be of service to all mankind. Salmon Pink and Apple Green are the official colors of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Alpha Kappa Alpha is one of nine Black Greek Letter Organizations in the National Pan Hellenic Council, whose organizations are affectionately called the "Divine Nine."



The Gamma Zeta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha was chartered in November 1947 as a New Jersey City-wide chapter, but currently encompasses just the campuses of Rutgers University-Newark, and New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York on December 4, 1906 by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the “Jewels” of the Fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.

The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha’s principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.

Alpha Phi Alpha has long stood at the forefront of the African-American community’s fight for civil rights through leaders such as: W.E.B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Edward Brooke, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, Paul Robeson, and many others. True to its form as the “first of firsts,”

The Iota Rho chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded at its chapter seat Newark College of Engineering in Newark New Jersey (currently New Jersey Institute of Technology – NJIT) on May 23, 1974 by thirteen strong and ambitious black men. The chapter however was founded with the vision of serving all schools with low minority populations in the Northern NJ area. Thus the founding line contained students from various schools within Essex County.

The 413th chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. was encouraged by the then director of the Educational Opportunity Program, Brother Melvin Thompson. The founding line affectionately known as “The Super Mean Thirteen” was hand selected by Brother Melvin Thompson and E.O.P. counselor Brother Clinton Dozier.

From its humble beginnings in the year of 1974, to its continued excellence into the new millennium, The Iota Rho Chapter holds a firm tradition to lead, serve and distinguish young college brothers through academics, and fellowship.

February 1969: The Black Organization of Students staged a “Locked Down” of Conklin Hall at Rutgers University - Newark for 72 hours and threw a banner over the front of the building which read “Liberation Hall”. They demanded that the Rutgers’ Board of Governors and the President increase the amount of Black students accepted into the University. At that time, 2% of the Newark Campus’s student body was African-American while 75% of Newark Public School System student’s were African-American.

Faced with this inequity, the members of BOS led the largest student movement by any racial group ever before seen at any of Rutgers University’s three campuses. Their actions led to the creation of the Educational Opportunity Fund Program at Rutgers Newark which, in turn, increased enrollment of African-Americans University-wide. Rutgers University – Newark currently has held the title for the ‘Most Diverse University in America’ for 11 Years (US News & World Report).

The Historic Black Organization of Students is an organization dedicated to serving the African Diaspora community at the University and in Newark through advocacy, community service, and a wide range of student-led programs.

The Hindu civilization has an unbroken chain of several thousands of years of history, culture, and heritage. The Hindu thought is a knowledge base that has been collected since the ancient Vedic period and is timeless and applicable to all of humanity. Despite its huge following, rich history, and numerous contributions to the human race, the Hindu way of life, or Sanatan Dharma, is perhaps the least understood among the major religions today.

One out of every six people follows what is broadly termed the Hindu way of life, encompassing religion, culture, and heritage. YUVA stands for Youth for Unity, Virtues, and Action, but it also means youth in Sanskrit. It conveys our vision and mission in a succinct manner. Hindu YUVA is about giving an immersive and experiential exposure to the Hindu way of life to the campus community in a friendly and positive atmosphere. We encourage maintaining a Hindu cultural identity in harmony with the larger community.

The mission of The Hindu YUVA at Rutgers University-Newark is to bring the Hindu student community together, spread the message of oneness, and explain the importance of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (The world as one family). As Hinduism is one of the largest and oldest religions in the world, we believe that this main message of oneness and equality should be spread throughout the Rutgers-Newark community. We hope to create a young generation that is strong and united. We would like to create a stronger youth power by providing students with virtues. The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) is a global legal aid and advocacy organization working to create a world where refugees and all people seeking safety are empowered to claim their right to freedom of movement and a path to lasting refuge.

Since its founding in 2008, IRAP has provided free legal aid to over 40,000 displaced people from over 100 different countries and has trained over 6,000 law students and lawyers in the process. Rutgers School of Law is one of IRAP’s 26 student chapters across the United States and Canada.

Our mission is the commitment to bringing light to emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, virtual reality, cryptocurrencies, and other Web3 platforms. We recognize that there is a significant knowledge gap and stigma surrounding these technologies among both students and faculty. The Moot Court Board is dedicated to fostering excellence in oral and written advocacy at Rutgers Law School. Our mission is to provide students with opportunities to develop and refine their advocacy skills through workshops, competitions, and mentorship. We aim to:

Train and Educate: Offer practical training in appellate advocacy, trial advocacy, negotiation, and alternative dispute resolution that complements the law school curriculum.

The Rutgers Newark Chapter of the NABA has the largest student support in the state of New Jersey. Many of its members have been very successful in their respective fields and have continued on to become CPA‘s and top managers within major firms and corporations.

In December 1969, a group of African-American accountants wanted to establish an organization to address the concerns of minorities entering the accounting profession and to make a commitment to professional and academic excellence. The group met and was determined to "make a difference" and make an impact in the accounting profession. In 1970, NABA INC. chartered its first professional chapter, located in New York City. From these humble beginnings, NABA has become a nationwide membership organization representing over 100,000 members.

NABA INC. continues to work on campus for the betterment and edification of all students in any major. Its commitment to excellence has made its student members some of the most sought-after on campuses across the country. Its emphasis on character building, ethics, morality, and professionalism has helped students gain the respect and competence needed to maintain that competitive edge in the business environment. To encourage a continued commitment to excellence, NABA INC. rewards its student members with scholarships based on need and academic performance.

NABA INC. has many conventions throughout the year. The student convention, which is held in October, provides an excellent opportunity for students to attend skills workshops, and interview with prospective employers for summer internships and/or full-time employment.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Rutgers University-Newark Chapter, plans to empower students to become informed advocates and leaders. Our work will include organizing, educating, and producing actual change through projects and collective action in the areas of economic and healthcare reformation, civic engagement and education, and global matters. We will achieve equity, political rights, and social inclusion that expand human and civil rights, eliminate discrimination, and uplift the well-being, education, and economic security for all people of color, one student at a time. We believe that just the chartering of our organization will be the first step to a more equitable society.

At Rutgers University-Newark, our work will reflect the long-standing goals of the NAACP. The core of our mission is education, and we won’t just inform students of how to be changemakers; we will use our education to mobilize the amazing minds that are already present on campus. For students, this college chapter of the NAACP will provide opportunities to learn about systemic issues affecting people of color, analyze the roots of social injustice, and directly apply their knowledge through activism, service, and leadership development.

To obtain the goals of our mission, we will prioritize four methods as seen in the NAACP national bylaws: direct action, litigation, legislation, and political action. Through direct action such as education, demonstrations, workshops, and other community engagement initiatives, we will apply the pressure needed to mobilize supporters for change. Our litigation will challenge discriminatory practices and defend the civil rights of marginalized groups from a legal perspective. Drafting, advocating, and supporting legislation that promotes and sustains equality while also eliminating systemic injustices at local, state, and national levels will be the main purpose of our legislative work. Last but not least, political action will help encourage voter registration and civic participation to ensure that communities have an even stronger voice in the political process. Each one of these methods will allow the Rutgers-Newark Chapter of the NAACP to make positive changes in the community and be able to work hand in hand with other student organizations and the schools on campus to strengthen our on-campus impact and to remind each other that our advocacy is collaborative and never isolated.

The Society is the nation's largest leadership honor society. Students are selected by their college for membership based on either academic standing or leadership potential. Candidacy is a nationally recognized achievement of honorable distinction. With 522 chapters, the Society currently has 657,968 members nationwide.

In addition to honorable distinction, the Society provides a step-by-step program for members to build their leadership skills through participation at their campus or online. Upon completion of the program, members receive their leadership certificate and take their place among the top student leaders at their campus and across the country. Members are able to list their affiliation on all statements of personal accomplishment, including their resume.

Omega Phi Chi is a multicultural sorority that was established on November 9, 1988 at Rutgers University in New Jersey by eight women of Asian, African-American, and Latina descent. Our eight founding mothers were an active group of young women leaders who felt the absence of any organization on the Rutgers campus that spoke to their needs across diverse backgrounds, distinct cultural roots and a commitment to womanhood. They came together to found a multicultural sorority, a different type of organization, that would not be categorized by ethnicity or culture.



Omega Phi Chi is above the stereotypical notions of sorority as a purely social endeavor. We have created a space for women to come together as a true sisterhood and support system that is strong and empowering. pantry+ is the on-campus food pantry established to help students who are having difficulty accessing enough nutritious food to stay focused on their studies and have an active lifestyle. Our main goal as an organization is to equip students and members for service in Christianity as well in the world. Our main goals for the year are to:

1. Hold worship services for students who do not want to go to the traditional church services.

2. Attend professional development conferences for students tailored to different academic fields.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students. The Founders deeply wished to create an organization that viewed itself as “a part of” the general community rather than “apart from” the general community. They believed that each potential member should be judged by his own merits, rather than his family background or affluence…without regard to race, nationality, skin tone or texture of hair. They desired for their fraternity to exist as part of an even greater brotherhood which would be devoted to the “inclusive we” rather than the “exclusive we”. Today, Phi Beta Sigma has blossomed into an international organization of leaders. No longer a single entity, members of the Fraternity have been instrumental in the establishment of the Phi Beta Sigma National Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union and The Sigma Beta Club Foundation. Pretty Educated Young Thriving (P.E.Y.T.) Womyn was recognized on May 9, 2018 on the campus of Rutgers University Newark. As the first women empowerment organization on campus to service ALL women, we pride ourselves in our ability to empower, unite, and educate women on the issues that effect our community as well as the issues that effect women on this campus. Our organization is open to all Rutgers students who identify with women and or support women. Through our initiatives, we have been able to service women in and around the community of Rutgers-Newark and help to build the future leaders of tomorrow. We host leadership and success panels, community service events, mentor-ships, socials, speak series and conventions. We strive to stand as a safe space for all women on campus to fellowship and find support within our members.
