Our services are free, confidential, and available to all enrolled students. The first historically Black Greek Letter Organization for women is Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., which was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC on January 15, 1908. Our Motto is By Culture and by Merit. The Purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life and to be of service to all mankind. Salmon Pink and Apple Green are the official colors of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Alpha Kappa Alpha is one of nine Black Greek Letter Organizations in the National Pan Hellenic Council, whose organizations are affectionately called the "Divine Nine."



The Gamma Zeta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha was chartered in November 1947 as a New Jersey City-wide chapter, but currently encompasses just the campuses of Rutgers University-Newark, and New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York on December 4, 1906 by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the “Jewels” of the Fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.

The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha’s principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.

Alpha Phi Alpha has long stood at the forefront of the African-American community’s fight for civil rights through leaders such as: W.E.B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Edward Brooke, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, Paul Robeson, and many others. True to its form as the “first of firsts,”

The Iota Rho chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded at its chapter seat Newark College of Engineering in Newark New Jersey (currently New Jersey Institute of Technology – NJIT) on May 23, 1974 by thirteen strong and ambitious black men. The chapter however was founded with the vision of serving all schools with low minority populations in the Northern NJ area. Thus the founding line contained students from various schools within Essex County.

The 413th chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. was encouraged by the then director of the Educational Opportunity Program, Brother Melvin Thompson. The founding line affectionately known as “The Super Mean Thirteen” was hand selected by Brother Melvin Thompson and E.O.P. counselor Brother Clinton Dozier.

From its humble beginnings in the year of 1974, to its continued excellence into the new millennium, The Iota Rho Chapter holds a firm tradition to lead, serve and distinguish young college brothers through academics, and fellowship.

The Association of Latin American Law Students’ (ALALS) general aim is to organize
the Latin American law students of Rutgers by developing a coherent, organized effort

February 1969: The Black Organization of Students staged a “Locked Down” of Conklin Hall at Rutgers University - Newark for 72 hours and threw a banner over the front of the building which read “Liberation Hall”. They demanded that the Rutgers’ Board of Governors and the President increase the amount of Black students accepted into the University. At that time, 2% of the Newark Campus’s student body was African-American while 75% of Newark Public School System student’s were African-American.

Faced with this inequity, the members of BOS led the largest student movement by any racial group ever before seen at any of Rutgers University’s three campuses. Their actions led to the creation of the Educational Opportunity Fund Program at Rutgers Newark which, in turn, increased enrollment of African-Americans University-wide. Rutgers University – Newark currently has held the title for the ‘Most Diverse University in America’ for 11 Years (US News & World Report).

The Historic Black Organization of Students is an organization dedicated to serving the African Diaspora community at the University and in Newark through advocacy, community service, and a wide range of student-led programs.

The Rutgers University-Newark Campus Awareness Response and Education (CARE) Team is committed to promoting campus safety and wellness. Through collaborative efforts we identify, assess and respond to student concerns on campus; assisting students who may be in crisis. The CARE Team develops a support plan for students to help them deal effectively with personal situations that might impact their academic performance.

Student behavior that is concerning to the student involved or to other members of the Rutgers community should be reported to the CARE Team. This behavior may include:

- Sending verbal or written threats to another student, staff, or faculty member
- Writing about or verbally expressing suicidal ideation
- Exhibiting declining academic performance and/or has excessive absences
- Expressing feelings of hopelessness or helplessness
- Displaying physical signs of fatigue, disorientation, anxiety, stress, failing to eat, or poor hygiene
