The first historically Black Greek Letter Organization for women is Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., which was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC on January 15, 1908. Our Motto is By Culture and by Merit. The Purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life and to be of service to all mankind. Salmon Pink and Apple Green are the official colors of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Alpha Kappa Alpha is one of nine Black Greek Letter Organizations in the National Pan Hellenic Council, whose organizations are affectionately called the "Divine Nine."



The Gamma Zeta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha was chartered in November 1947 as a New Jersey City-wide chapter, but currently encompasses just the campuses of Rutgers University-Newark, and New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York on December 4, 1906 by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the “Jewels” of the Fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.

The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha’s principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.

Alpha Phi Alpha has long stood at the forefront of the African-American community’s fight for civil rights through leaders such as: W.E.B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Edward Brooke, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, Paul Robeson, and many others. True to its form as the “first of firsts,”

The Iota Rho chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded at its chapter seat Newark College of Engineering in Newark New Jersey (currently New Jersey Institute of Technology – NJIT) on May 23, 1974 by thirteen strong and ambitious black men. The chapter however was founded with the vision of serving all schools with low minority populations in the Northern NJ area. Thus the founding line contained students from various schools within Essex County.

The 413th chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. was encouraged by the then director of the Educational Opportunity Program, Brother Melvin Thompson. The founding line affectionately known as “The Super Mean Thirteen” was hand selected by Brother Melvin Thompson and E.O.P. counselor Brother Clinton Dozier.

From its humble beginnings in the year of 1974, to its continued excellence into the new millennium, The Iota Rho Chapter holds a firm tradition to lead, serve and distinguish young college brothers through academics, and fellowship.

February 1969: The Black Organization of Students staged a “Locked Down” of Conklin Hall at Rutgers University - Newark for 72 hours and threw a banner over the front of the building which read “Liberation Hall”. They demanded that the Rutgers’ Board of Governors and the President increase the amount of Black students accepted into the University. At that time, 2% of the Newark Campus’s student body was African-American while 75% of Newark Public School System student’s were African-American.

Faced with this inequity, the members of BOS led the largest student movement by any racial group ever before seen at any of Rutgers University’s three campuses. Their actions led to the creation of the Educational Opportunity Fund Program at Rutgers Newark which, in turn, increased enrollment of African-Americans University-wide. Rutgers University – Newark currently has held the title for the ‘Most Diverse University in America’ for 11 Years (US News & World Report).

The Historic Black Organization of Students is an organization dedicated to serving the African Diaspora community at the University and in Newark through advocacy, community service, and a wide range of student-led programs.

The Hindu civilization has an unbroken chain of several thousands of years of history, culture, and heritage. The Hindu thought is a knowledge base that has been collected since the ancient Vedic period and is timeless and applicable to all of humanity. Despite its huge following, rich history, and numerous contributions to the human race, the Hindu way of life, or Sanatan Dharma, is perhaps the least understood among the major religions today.

One out of every six people follows what is broadly termed the Hindu way of life, encompassing religion, culture, and heritage. YUVA stands for Youth for Unity, Virtues, and Action, but it also means youth in Sanskrit. It conveys our vision and mission in a succinct manner. Hindu YUVA is about giving an immersive and experiential exposure to the Hindu way of life to the campus community in a friendly and positive atmosphere. We encourage maintaining a Hindu cultural identity in harmony with the larger community.

The mission of The Hindu YUVA at Rutgers University-Newark is to bring the Hindu student community together, spread the message of oneness, and explain the importance of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (The world as one family). As Hinduism is one of the largest and oldest religions in the world, we believe that this main message of oneness and equality should be spread throughout the Rutgers-Newark community. We hope to create a young generation that is strong and united. We would like to create a stronger youth power by providing students with virtues. We would like to create a robust Hindu presence and voice at Rutgers University-Newark by bringing students and different like-minded organizations together. Hindu YUVA will act as a bridge between the Hindu students and the administration, and the Hindu community outside Rutgers University Newark.

We believe that our mission coincides with Rutgers-Newark’s commitment to making diversity a way of university life where all members of our community feel welcome, valued, and respected. Hindu YUVA will provide a safe space for people who identify as Hindu to practice Sanatan Dharma and speak their minds. Also, it will be a medium and an outlet for spreading awareness about Hinduism to those who want to learn more about it. Rutgers-Newark students, faculty, and visitors will find resources here to learn about Hinduism and its challenges. While also connecting with peers and receiving support from like-minded individuals.

Our activities put a lot of emphasis on team building, leadership qualities, and character development. The idea is not to merely organize events but to be the agents of change by developing essential personality traits such as physical and intellectual abilities, interpersonal skills, leading by example, and developing empathy for others regardless of background.

Young Hindu Americans carry a great deal of responsibility to share this culture, preserve its meaning, and practice its universal values as the inheritors of this way of life. Hindu YUVA derives its inspiration from this ancient knowledge and understands the mammoth task lying in front of the young Hindu Americans. The Rutgers Newark Chapter of the NABA has the largest student support in the state of New Jersey. Many of its members have been very successful in their respective fields and have continued on to become CPA‘s and top managers within major firms and corporations.

In December 1969, a group of African-American accountants wanted to establish an organization to address the concerns of minorities entering the accounting profession and to make a commitment to professional and academic excellence. The group met and was determined to "make a difference" and make an impact in the accounting profession. In 1970, NABA INC. chartered its first professional chapter, located in New York City. From these humble beginnings, NABA has become a nationwide membership organization representing over 100,000 members.

NABA INC. continues to work on campus for the betterment and edification of all students in any major. Its commitment to excellence has made its student members some of the most sought-after on campuses across the country. Its emphasis on character building, ethics, morality, and professionalism has helped students gain the respect and competence needed to maintain that competitive edge in the business environment. To encourage a continued commitment to excellence, NABA INC. rewards its student members with scholarships based on need and academic performance.

The Society is the nation's largest leadership honor society. Students are selected by their college for membership based on either academic standing or leadership potential. Candidacy is a nationally recognized achievement of honorable distinction. With 522 chapters, the Society currently has 657,968 members nationwide.

In addition to honorable distinction, the Society provides a step-by-step program for members to build their leadership skills through participation at their campus or online. Upon completion of the program, members receive their leadership certificate and take their place among the top student leaders at their campus and across the country. Members are able to list their affiliation on all statements of personal accomplishment, including their resume.

Omega Phi Chi is a multicultural sorority that was established on November 9, 1988 at Rutgers University in New Jersey by eight women of Asian, African-American, and Latina descent. Our eight founding mothers were an active group of young women leaders who felt the absence of any organization on the Rutgers campus that spoke to their needs across diverse backgrounds, distinct cultural roots and a commitment to womanhood. They came together to found a multicultural sorority, a different type of organization, that would not be categorized by ethnicity or culture.



Omega Phi Chi is above the stereotypical notions of sorority as a purely social endeavor. We have created a space for women to come together as a true sisterhood and support system that is strong and empowering. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9, 1914, by three young African-American male students. The Founders deeply wished to create an organization that viewed itself as “a part of” the general community rather than “apart from” the general community. They believed that each potential member should be judged by his own merits, rather than his family background or affluence…without regard to race, nationality, skin tone or texture of hair. They desired for their fraternity to exist as part of an even greater brotherhood which would be devoted to the “inclusive we” rather than the “exclusive we”. Today, Phi Beta Sigma has blossomed into an international organization of leaders. No longer a single entity, members of the Fraternity have been instrumental in the establishment of the Phi Beta Sigma National Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union and The Sigma Beta Club Foundation. Sigma Beta Rho is a national multicultural Fraternity based upon the principles of Society, Brotherhood, and Remembrance. These pillars were established upon the formation of the Beta Chapter at the State University of New York, Binghamton, on August 16, 1996 and continue to guide our brotherhood to this day. Our founders realized the unique promise of a Greek-lettered organization that instills positive values amongst its members, provides an avenue for leadership, and stresses self-betterment.

In its nascent stages, these founders understood that they must maintain a constant and growing nationwide network in order to truly manifest their organizational vision. As such, several new brothers were inducted on August 22, 1998 at St. Johns University, which became the Gamma Chapter. At this time, eight men from three different universities were given the status of National Founding Fathers as they were the visionaries who established the Fraternity for years to come.

Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. highly prides itself as an organization of diverse collegiate and professional women dedicated to uplifting traditionally marginalized groups, specifically Latinos and women, by serving as a voice and means for empowerment. Since 1987, the Hermandad has been an outlet for professional development and personal growth to its members and serving constituents. The Sorority’s impact can be seen in the outstanding accomplishments of Hermanas, the young women they have mentored through the LADYS and PEARLS Programs, and through the lives of people the Hermandad has touched via their many literacy initiatives. They prove to their respective colleges and communities that women of color can make a difference.



Specifically, the Tau Chapter of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc., was founded at Stevens Institute of Technology in the Spring of 2000. The chapter grew to include Rutgers University - Newark in the Fall of 2004. Since then, the Hermanas of the Tau Chapter have grown to become professionals in their field, and have also been able to serve the Hermandad both nationally by upholding national board positions, as well as locally through our Graduate/Professional Chapter of New Jersey: Theta Eta.

Sino typically implies Chinese or Chinese-affiliated. In that same spirit, we are calling our organization Sino Undergraduate Student Association to highlight historically Chinese-influenced cultures. This is not limited to just East Asia, but also Southeast Asian countries that may fit this criteria.

The SUSA shall exist for the following purposes:
1. To help the Southeast and East Asian student diaspora with their living and academic adjustments;
2. To arrange events that promote cultural diversity in the Rutgers Newark community through showcasing East Asian culture; and

SO-RAH is dedicated to combating hunger, reducing food waste, advocating for the homeless by organizing events such as sandwich drives, food recoveries, food drives, clothing drives, educational events, and other activities to help out our local and school communities. They are faced with the prospects of choosing between basic necessities such as paying their rent, food, and going to school. Hunger and homelessness, in truth, are prevalent issues that afflict far too many people. More specifically, nearly three in five students face basic needs insecurity.

The National Science Foundation developed the LSAMP (Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation) to increase the number of professionals from minority groups who are traditionally underrepresented in the STEM fields. The Garden State LSAMP (GS-LSAMP) program provides New Jersey students interested in non-medical STEM fields with a supportive learning community and access to extensive resources to facilitate academic and career success. The GS-LSAMP at Rutgers University is part of an alliance of nine neighboring colleges and universities in New Jersey that provide local students with valuable opportunities for enrichment, research and employment.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations - to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. Founded January 16, 1920, Zeta began as an idea conceived by five coeds at Howard University in Washington D.C.: Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie and Pearl Neal. These five women, also known as our Five Pearls, dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood. It was the ideal of the Founders that the Sorority would reach college women in all parts of the country who were sorority minded and desired to follow the founding principles of the organization. Founder Viola Tyler was oft quoted to say "[In the ideal collegiate situation] there is a Zeta in a girl regardless of race, creed, or color, who has high standards and principles, a good scholarly average and an active interest in all things that she undertakes to accomplish."

The Psi Lambda chapter consists of two schools; Rutgers University - Newark and New Jersey Institute of Technology. Chartered in 1983, the Oh Sooooo Sophisticated Ladies of Psi Lambda constantly strive to uphold the principles of Zeta and make a difference in their community.
